Yellowstone, Day 3

Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.  That's the name of this magnificent gorge carved by the Yellowstone River over the last 500,000 years (give or take a few).  The hike down to lower falls provided an amazing view and opportunity to feel the power of the water crashing over the edge.  Unfortunately, the lack of funds for national parks is evident along this trail that is crumbling with handrails rotted and broken.  If you  like mid-century architecture check out the Canyon Lodge area.  Built during the period, the design is similar to what we are used to in Palm Springs.  The building was part of the "Mission 66" program where Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson administrations anf Congress provided funds for improvements and additions for visitor services by the 50th anniversary of the National Park Service in 1966.
