The Salton Sea SRA offers several campgrounds along the shore of the Salton Sea - California's largest lake. The Salton Sea is located in Southern California (in both Riverside and Imperial Counties) and is in the Coachella Valley (about an hour drive from Palm Springs). Be aware of extreme summer temperatures and foul smells during times when the sea is full of dead fish.
Campground is located 155 miles southeast of Los Angeles on Hwy 10. The park's visitor center is 25 miles southeast of Indio, via Highway 111. The nearest city is North Shore. Entrance GPS: N33 30.524 W115 55.095

Amenities vary by campground.
Headquarters Campground - offers 15 full hook-up sites, picnic table and BBQ grill at each site. RVs only (40' max length), no tents. Reservations accepted.
New Camp Campground - located adjacent to the visitor center offers 25 tent/RV sites (35' max length). 4 sites have water and 30 amp. electric service (1 of these is usually reserved for a camp host). No reservations - 1st come, 1st serve. Several campsites offer nice shaded areas. We were originally going to camp here (Feb 2010), but a sewer line break caused them to open up the Mecca Beach Campground (see below).
Mecca Beach Campground - located 1 mile south of the visitor center - offers 109 developed campsites. Four full hook-up sites (30 & 50 amp. service). Each campsite has a picnic table and fire ring. Toilets and showers (solar and heated) available. We camped here in Feb. 2010 - very nice, would return if open. Sorry, didn't measure parking space widths, but did back in our 36' rig without a problem with the rear overhanging. No reservations - 1st come, 1st serve. Entrance GPS: N33 29.509 W115 54.099
Note: Due to 2010 CA State budget constraints, some campgrounds are closed. Check their website for current operations.
