Located right on Lake Cuyamaca near Julian, this campground is about an hour's drive east of San Diego. The lake is beautiful - albeit a bit crowded on weekends - and offers some pretty good fishing for trout, bass and even the elusive sturgeon! You can rent boats, hike around the lake and surrounding mountains, or just relax at the campground. Julian is about 8 miles away - and provides a great place to have a meal and the apple pie for which Julian is known.
There are a number of campgrounds on or near Lake Cuyamaca. Chambers Park is the main RV location, and is right on the lake. This small park features about 20 RV spaces with 30 amp and water hook-ups. The same campground also has three sleeping cabins (beds in a large playhouse-like structure), two condos and tent camping - all available for rent. Restrooms are clean and, as of June 2010, they're in the process of installing showers for campground use.
The main disadvantage is that many RV sites back right up to a highway (sites 9-23). It's not especially noticeable, save the occasional motorcycle or loud vehicle that passes by. I strongly recommend booking early and reserving site number 23. It's on the end of the line and offers full views of the lake. Site 22, right next door, also provides some nice views. Both are about as far from the roadway as possible.
Fees are $25/night as of this review.
