Whitewater Memorial State Park was established in 1949 as a living memorial to the men and women who served in World War II. It is the result of a community effort in which Fayette, Franklin, Union and Wayne counties joined together to acquire the initial acreage including wooded rolling hills, steep ridges and ravines in addition to level, open fields and a man-made lake.

The Hornbeam Nature Preserve within the park includes an unusual number of hornbeam and hop hornbeam trees. In spring the forest is covered with a dense carpet of wildflowers.

Two-hundred acre Whitewater Lake and access to Brookville Reservoir, along with other recreational facilities make Whitewater Memorial State Park a great family getaway.

Starve Hollow State Recreation Area encompasses approximately 280 acres offering some of the best camping in southern Indiana. Carved out of the 18,000 acre Jackson-Washington State Forest it provides an array of recreational opportunities such as fishing the 145-acre Starve Hollow Lake, swimming on the large sandy beach or learning about conservation at the Nature Center. For the more avid outdoor enthusiast hiking and mountain biking on nearby trails is available. Hunting can be done during various seasons by accessing nearby Jackson-Washington State Forest. Shelters and playgrounds are located on the property as well. Winter viewing of Bald Eagles has also become an attraction in recent years due to winter draw-down of the lake for gizzard shad management.
